Distribution
Standard addressed in this unit
MKT-MP-12
"Utilize knowledge of distribution to manage supply-chain activities"
In this unit, you will learn...
The 3 types of packaging
The purpose of packaging
Why packaging is important
How companies choose a package design
How to create your own prototype of a package (fun!)
Then What?
After creating your own package design, you will learn about distribution methods and focus on distributing a product overseas. This portion of the unit has not been opened yet. You will see that there is a lot to consider when distributing products internationally and companies that don't do their research beforehand can set their products up for disaster (Case in point: the Nova car). But first, let's start with the EZ-PZ stuff... package design!

But first, let's start with the EZ-PZ stuff... package design!
Lesson 1: Let's Learn About Packaging
Package design doesn't happen by accident. A lot of thought goes into how to protect, promote, provide information, ensure safety, and meet customer needs through packaging. Watch the slide show below to see a quick review of packaging. The slide show is very text heavy but it contains a lot of important information. Package design research is a very interesting (and long) process. Who would have thought that so much detail went into developing the design on packages??? As you watch the video and slide show, keep in mind that you will be asked to make a package design for a product soon!
Step 1: We will watch this in class and have a discussion
Step 1: We will watch this in class and have a discussion
Step 2: Slideshow - You will look at the slideshow below and answer the questions below it.
Slide Show Questions
After viewing the slide show, answer the questions below:
After viewing the slide show, answer the questions below:
- In the slide show, the authors states that “Packaging is the science and art of … (fill in the rest of the statement)
- Finish this quote: “The package on a retail shelf is the last opportunity to…”
- Define the 3 levels of packaging: Hint - The first is Primary packaging
- What are the 4 functions of packaging?
- What are the 4 purposes of packaging?
- What are the 4 important elements of packaging (Look at the "Importance of packaging" slide)
- Look up a product not shown in this slide show that experienced higher sales after it changed its packaging. Briefly discuss it and provide a picture. USE GOOGLE TO LOOK THIS UP.
Lesson 2: Promoting through Package Design
Package Promotion - Creating a prototype of something to sell overseas.
Before deciding on a package design, different prototypes are created and presented to focus groups to get their feedback. For this hands-on assignment, you will be creating a (very) small replica of a product box.
Simply find a picture of any boxed product online and redesign the package artwork and design so that it has a better chance of being purchased by shoppers. Students can download the box template below and insert text and pictures in the rectangles or download a template online. When finished, print the box out and tape it together so that you can take a picture of it. For example, save a picture of the current Wheaties box then design your own version of the box and print it out. Tape it together and take a pic so we can see your 3-D version.
Note: If you do a search of box the plates, there are tons of them online. Squares, rectangles, pyramids, etc. Feel free to use any type of template that you find.
Remember: The package design is the last chance to sell a product so make your package stand out on the shelf! Check out the Youtube video below regarding creative package design. It's some pretty cool stuff!

Additional pdf questions: After answering the 6 questions on the pdf, add these questions to the list and turn the document into Canvas
- What is an intermediary?
- Define direct and indirect distribution
- What is the difference between intensive, selective, and exclusive distribution?
- What is horizontal conflict and vertical conflict?
- Choose one good or service you’ve consumed today. Consider the channel activities that occurred before this product reached you. How do you think channel members added value to this product? What pattern of distribution do you think was used?

Now that you have learned about the importance of packaging, created your own 3-D package design, and learned about distribution, take some time to read through the areas of the Power Point above that you are uncertain about and fill out the definition sheet below. THIS SHEET IS WHERE YOUR TEST QUESTIONS WILL COME FROM so fill it out thoroughly and turn it in to Canvas. Save it so you can access it later and this unit will be a breeze. Note: The answers can be found on the Power Point that we went over in class. It is located above this section.

Semester 1 will not be doing the egg assignment below
Protective Packaging - Drop It Like It's Hot!
This is an EGG-cellent assignment!
Damaged goods cannot be sold (at least not at regular price) and thus can result in a loss of profit. For this reason, protective packaging is extremely important. In this assignment, you will create the outer protective packaging that a product would be shipped in. The goal is to provide enough protection so that if the product were to be dropped from 6-7 feet, that it wouldn’t break.
For this lesson, you will need 1 egg, some type of packaging (usually a box), and some type of filler to protect an egg from breaking.
The directions are very simple.
WARNING: It may be best to do this outside in case the egg breaks.
Notes:
-Make sure that your box design is cost effective. If your package costs more than the product, is it really worth the hassle?
-Graphic design is not important for the protective shipping package as this is not the packaging that the end consumer will see. This box design in this lesson is solely to protect the product as it is being shipped.
RUBRIC
SECONDARY MARKET RESEARCH- Go online and get pics of three cost effective packages that might work for this project. Paste the pics into a Word document and discuss why EACH would provide good protection. 20 pts
DESIGN CHOICE: Under this, show the design you will make and type an explanation that describes why your box will protect the egg. Explanation must have a picture associated with it. 20 pts
EXTERIOR: Your box is fully closed (no chance of it opening during transportation) 20 pts.
PRODUCT TESTING: You will drop your egg from a height of 6-7 feet onto pavement. The egg should not crack! 20 pts
PUNCTUALITY: Project is ready to go on Monday 20 pts
